SAFETY

Be careful and aware at all times in the cities and tourist areas. In Rome the metro is sufficiently safe but don’t be unwise.

In areas like the train station or bus depot, do not turn loose of your bags, not even for a few seconds. It is a common practice for thieves to distract you while another grabs your bag and runs off with it before you know what happened.

If you are alone and need to buy a train ticket, get money from a bank machine, buy food, etc. keep all you stuff in front of you the whole time you transact your business, between you and the machine or clerk. Carry a purse that ZIPS and keep it zipped and lodged between your arm and body.

Thieves are expert at reaching undetected into pockets, backpacks and purses in crowded places. Your best bet is to carry your valuables in a small, unobtrusive pack under your clothes.

Note that in Italy you are required to carry government issued ID (your passport) at all times. Honestly, just do it. Keep it in the pack under your clothes if you are nervous about it.
